That situation has gotten so bad that even Western Union has issued a warning to customers to be careful in such situations.
Shelley Bernhardt, who serves as Western Union's Director of Consumer Protection, says: "Fraudsters use sophisticated techniques and create very believable stories to lure you in. However, there usually are one or more red flags that can tip people off to a possible scam, such as a renter wanting to rent a property sight unseen or extreme urgency to get a deal done." Also, if the price for the rental is too low, watch out. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Not all short term rentals are equal
USA Today has written about how some short term rentals may not be scams, but they might not be the best, either. Some people rent out their own apartments, and the accommodations may not be up to par. In addition, while such a rental is not illegal, Chris Heywood of NYC & Company, New York's tourism department, says that "this isn't a business practice we support, and we strongly discourage people" from doing so. "It's a real case of buyer beware," he says. In addition, people renting out their own apartments can violate their lease or co-op or condo agreements.
